After “An Introduction to Kiwanis” meeting on January 17, 1974, the Kiwanis Club of North St. Andrew was constituted on February 28, having been sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Kingston.   It was given its charter on March 22, 1974, at a ceremony at the Casa Monte Hotel, presided over by the Governor of the Eastern Canada & the Caribbean (EC&C) District, Headley Ivany.  Special guests for the occasion were then Governor General of Jamaica, His Excellency Sir Florizel Glasspole, O.N., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., C.D. and Lady Glasspole.  The charter was handed to Ashton Wright, giving him the honour of serving as the club’s first president.

Chartered with 36 members, we grew in leaps and bounds and by the early 1990’s, we were the sixth largest club in the Kiwanis world, with a membership of over 300 men.  In pursuing the goals and objects of Kiwanis, the club welcomes professional and businessmen with a common drive to improve their communities whilst sharing fellowship.  These attitudes and motives ensure a vibrant organization and creates enduring friendships, which are critical components for effective community service.

Some of the community activities over the years include…

Construction of wards and other facilities at several hospitals;

Construction of the Mico Youth Counselling, Resource and Development Centre and construction of classrooms at several schools;

Staging the Roy Pennant Meals on Wheels Programme on the last Sunday of every month, which has fed thousands of needy citizens for over 4 decades

Breakfast programmes and educational trips for the children resident at several Places of Safety.

Sponsorship of 29 Service Leadership Clubs (12 Builders Clubs – operating at the Primary and Junior High School level; 11 Key Clubs – operating at the Secondary School level and 6 Circle K Clubs – operating at the Tertiary level).

Today we strive to keep up to the high standards of the trailblazers. We meet weekly on Thursdays at the POC.
